Enjoy
your stay at Hunter Peak Ranch by experiencing the great outdoors.
We are located high in the Absaroka mountains which provides excellent
views and fun mountain outdoor recreation. Take a trail ride,
fish the Clark’s Fork River, Cross Country Ski or Snowmobile
the Beartooths. No matter what you do, you’re sure to be
excited. |
Trail
rides are a wonderful way to experience the western way
of life in the mountains. We ride unlimited trails in the Absaroka
Mountains and Beartooth Plateau with breathtaking views. Rides
vary in terrain from easy to difficult, and length of time from
an hour to all day to accommodate riders' experience level and
expectations. All rides are guided by experienced backcountry
horsemen using gentle, trail wise horses. Guides and wranglers
match riders with horses and saddles with adjustments made as
needed. To
ensure the safety of all involved, rides are done at a walk.
This also allows good viewing of the scenery, wildflowers, and
wildlife. Stops along the way ease sore muscles and allow for
picture taking. Riders develop mutual respect with their companion
horse, deep appreciation of the area, and camaraderie with other
riders and guides while horseback riding.

"Lead around rides" offer
youngsters their first horseback ride. A guide will lead the
horse and rider in the yard, along the river, and through the
woods. A parent is welcome to walk along side a young or unsure
child. They always return to the hitching rail with a really
big smile across their faces, a perfect beginning to their
horseback riding experiences.

Short Horseback Rides of one
to two hours allow riders to get used to the saddle and the horse.
This is a perfect length of time for new people (and for those
who have not ridden in some time) to experience trail riding.
Trails are easy with no significant obstacles. A popular trail
ride from the ranch is on the Lewis and Clark Trail. This five
mile loop is on relatively level ground with few ups and downs.
The destination is the Middle Falls on Bear Creek, a spectacular
and often photographed waterfall.

Longer Horseback Rides of
up to four hours provide riders wih further exploration of the
area. Trails can be progressively steeper, rockier, and more
challenging than short rides. Our Clarksfork Canyon overlook
is an example of this type of ride. This ten mile ride utilizes
more of the Lewis and Clark Trail, crosses the Bear Creek Bridge,
and climbs about 1000 feet in elevation to the overlook, where
we enjoy peering down into the Clarksfork Wild
and Scenic River. Loops make the return
ride just as interesting.

Day Horseback Rides provide
the rider with a true western mountain experience. The high country
views are awesome, and bush-wacking is involved on occasion.
The North Crandall Trail is a spectacular ride taking guests
to mountain tops with unforgettable views. Excellent fishing
holes beckon those interested. Others opt
for riding even farther and higher. A hearty lunch is provided.
These rides depart the ranch after breakfast and return in time
to clean up before dinner.

Fishing
Catch that big one right out your door! Rainbow, Cutthroat,
Brown & Grayling trout fill the Clarksfork River and nearby lakes & streams.
Ride or hike a little or a lot to find the perfect spot for high mountain fishing
fun. |

Hiking
Hikers have options from easy tramps to challenging sojourns. Each
outing provides participants with amazing sights, sounds, smells,
and a feeling of oneness with the environment. One always has
a good hiking experience in the mountains. |

Swimming & Tubing
On those hot summer days, jumping in the Clarks Fork River or nearby Crandall
Creek for a swim will surely cool you off! Relaxing on a tube while floating
the river is a great way to spend a hot afternoon! |
